CONCACAF Champions Cup preview, February 6-8 (plus USL transfers & NISA news)

CONCACAF Champions Cup

It's February and competitive soccer is back! While the USL doesn't start until March, and the Canadian Premier League waits for April, the CONCACAF Champions Cup gets underway on Wednesday with MLS's Vancouver and the CPL's Forge playing their first round games. The Whitecaps are at home to UANL Tigres, currently third in Liga MX, while Forge welcome Chivas Guadalajara to Hamilton with the Goats currently fifth in the league. One of these games will be more competitive than the other.

USL Championship transfer round-up

Charleston Battery look good for another tilt at the Eastern Championship, further adding striker MD Myers from New York II and defender Nathan DosSantos from Pittsburgh to a good haul so far.

NISA news

Well, then...

Champions Flower City Union have confirmed they will not be defending their title, instead reformatting the club in the amateur ranks for, one presumes, an eventual switch to the USL. Likewise, Albion San Diego have opted out of the 2024 season, leaving only Michigan Stars of 2023's last four returning for this year as Chattanooga switch to MLS Next Pro. There is still no official word from the USSF on whether NISA will retain its Division 3 status, leaving the US Open Cup draw up in the air.

LA Force have announced they will play in Long Beach this year, leaving Irvine for new arrivals Irvine Zeta. That gives the league ten clubs if it does run - three in LA, one in Phoenix, two in Detroit, two in Georgia, and one apiece in Maryland and Florida (although Club de Lyon's participation is far from certain).
